QuickStart Guide to Documenting Your Family: Task 2 - Choose the Right Perspective

I am a quite small person, while my husband is very tall and I often say that we live in two different worlds. Of course it is just a joke, but it really makes a huge difference from what level you are taking a photograph: I almost always try to get higher when I am taking pictures of a tall person and I almost always get down when I am taking pictures of a child. There are some exceptions of course, but in 99 % of cases you should be at your model's level.

First of all being at the level of your subject keeps the proportions right. If you stand and take a picture of a child who is close to you, her head will look bigger and her body and legs will look shorter than they actually are.

Second, a photograph looks much more intimate if taken from your child's point of view, because it shows how the world appears to her.
